What is the new 2021 L.A. mask mandate?

Effective since July 17, 2021, Los Angeles County now requires everyone, regardless of vaccination status, to wear masks in indoor public spaces such as bars, restaurants, theaters, stores, and shopping malls. Businesses are expected to help enforce the 2021 L.A. mask mandate.

Upon request, employers also are required to provide their unvaccinated employees with correct-sized respirators and basic instructions on how it is used. Respirators must be replaced if they get damaged, dirty, or become difficult to breathe through.

Ensure that your business is prepared and in compliance by stocking masks for guests and staff, or NIOSH-certified respirators for the most thorough protection.

Why is this mask mandate in effect now?

On July 15, the Los Angeles CountyDepartment of Public Health published a report stating that since limitations on indoor public spaces were lifted on June 15, the transmission of Covid-19 in L.A. Country had increased from “Moderate” levels to “Substantial.”

Before re-opening, the county was averaging 173 new cases a day. Within a week of reopening, the county was averaging 1,077 new cases per day, with 1,537 additional cases reported on July 15 alone, and there were three Covid-related deaths.

Due to this rapid increase, the new mandate is an attempt to reduce citizens’ risk of getting or transmitting the virus. Masking while indoors will provide an additional layer of protection and can help slow the spread without limiting business occupancy and operations.

How can L. A. County businesses comply?

The CDC has endorsed N95 respirators as the front line of protection from viruses. In an explanation on proper use of PPE, the CDC states that N95 respirator masks provide the best protection because they “[…] reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles, from small particle aerosols to large droplets. N95 respirators are tight-fitting respirators that filter out at least 95% of particles in the air, including large and small particles.”
