What is the status of the omicron variant?

The first preliminary studies on omicron have recently revealed it to be even more infectious than the delta variant. In one study, 24 hours after infection, omicron replicated 70 times higher than delta and the original covid-19 virus. Models suggest that omicron will start spiking globally between Christmas and New Years, and that U.S. rates will likely reach their peak in early January.

Fully vaccinated individuals still have a stronger level of protection from omicron, but those who are unvaccinated are at high risk. People who get booster shots will be the most protected, because boosters re-stimulate the immune system and increase antibodies. While vaccination is the best form of direct protection from the virus, it is also extremely important to take all preventative precautions available, including wearing properly-fitting PPE and keeping your hands clean as you go about your day.

Use hand sanitizer

Since the onset of covid-19 in 2020, hand sanitizer has been proven to be an important means of controlling the transmission of infectious disease. While it’s not as effective as washing with soap and water, it’s best to keep hand sanitizer on hand to use when soap is not available.

When applying hand sanitizer, it’s crucial to thoroughly cover both hands, including the finger webs and the nail beds. If your hands have visible grime or grit on them, you should apply sanitizer more liberally, according to the CDC. Rub the hands together until they are completely dry. Ensure you use a sanitizer that has at least 60% alcohol, as recommended by the CDC.

Best masks to protect yourself from omicron

The CDC has endorsed N95 respirators as the front line of protection from viruses. In an explanation on proper use of PPE, the CDC, states that N95 respirator masks provide the best protection because they “[…] reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles, from small particle aerosols to large droplets. N95 respirators are tight-fitting respirators that filter out at least 95% of particles in the air, including large and small particles.”

Wear an N95 mask properly

High-quality N95 masks are one of the easiest and most important tools to protect yourself and those around you from omicron. N95 masks should cover your nose and mouth fully and should fit snugly. To ensure your respirator fits well, conduct a fit test.

To choose an appropriate N95 respirator, you must first ensure that you are using a National Institute for Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) approved filtering facepiece mask that is also FDA-authorized. ShopNIOSH-Approved N95 respirators here.
