As of December 2021, the highly infectious omicron variant of covid-19 is beginning to spread throughout the United States and across the world. It is predicted that medical supply chains connecting the world’s economies could experience significant strain due to the surge, especially as the holiday season approaches and the Asian market threatens to enforce new restrictions. Learn more about the risks of the new variant and discover secure domestic resources as PPE supply chains prepare for the omicron variant.

What is the status of the omicron variant?

The new omicron variant began making headlines in late November 2021, after a South African scientist flagged the emergence of the strain. The World Health Organization quickly deemed omicron a “variant of concern,” indicating that it is likely to spread rapidly across the globe. In the weeks since its discovery, the strain has been found in the U.S., Canada, Europe, Israel, Australia, and in Hong Kong. According to the CDC, “…the omicron variant likely will spread more easily than the original SARS-CoV-2 virus.”

PPE supply chains prepare for omicron variant

While there have not yet been omicron cases reported in mainland China, the Chinese government’s response could have a huge impact on global medical supply chains. China is expected to employ a ‘zero-COVID’ policy that could cause major disruption, and some analysts have cautioned that China could intensify its covid-prevention measures in 2022.

The U.S. federal government now faces the challenge of ensuring a reliable domestic supply of PPE, as lawmakers have warned that dependence on foreign supplies could present an unstable reliance and potential security risk. According to Soumi Saha, Vice President for Advocacy with Premier Inc. Manufacturers,

“…[domestic manufacturers] need reliable business from both the government and the healthcare industry to create a sustainable supply chain for the future.”

The supply chain is already in such a precarious state that a new surge could resurrect massive shortages. It is likely that supplies will be further stressed when the omicron variant cases further accelerate. It is important that when possible, U.S. businesses purchase PPE from reliable, domestic companies with secure supply chains.

Protection against variants of concern

Fully vaccinated individuals still have strong protection against all forms of covid-19, but those who are unvaccinated are at high risk.

While vaccination is the best form of direct protection from the virus, it is also extremely important to take all preventative precautions available. Face masks are the most effective form of preventative protection. The WHO has endorsed masking for vaccinated and unvaccinated people alike, especially in public indoor spaces. Similarly, the CDC updated its guidance in July to recommend the same. By continuing to wear masks in indoor public spaces, vaccinated people can help slow the spread and protect those who are unvaccinated, immuno-compromised, or otherwise at risk.

The CDC has endorsed N95 respirators as the front line of protection from viruses. In an explanation on proper use of PPE, the CDC, states that N95 respirator masks provide the best protection because they “[…] reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles, from small particle aerosols to large droplets. N95 respirators are tight-fitting respirators that filter out at least 95% of particles in the air, including large and small particles.”
