What is the status of the Delta variant?

Delta is currently the predominant strain of the covid-19 virus in the United States. It is highly transmissible. The CDC recently reported that the variant is more contagious than the common cold and all other known variants. Fully vaccinated individuals still have strong protection against all forms of covid-19, but those who are unvaccinated are at high risk.

While vaccination is the best form of direct protection from the virus, it is also extremely important to take all preventative precautions available. Face masks are the most effective form of preventative protection. The WHO has recently endorsed masking for vaccinated and unvaccinated people alike, especially in public indoor spaces. Similarly, the CDC updated its guidance in July to recommend the same.

By continuing to wear masks in indoor public spaces, vaccinated people can help slow the spread and protect those who are unvaccinated, immuno-compromised, or otherwise at risk.

Delta variant strains PPE supply chains

While public institutions like hospitals, clinics, and health departments are required to keep a stock of PPE for emergencies, many ran out quickly in 2020 due to the total overwhelm. Since then, public and private institutions alike have had to seek out PPE sources on the open market.

Despite the new wave of infection throughout the U.S. driven by the Delta variant in 2021, domestic manufacturers of face masks and other PPE are becoming threatened as sales from cheaper, foreign companies surge. The American Mask Manufacturers Association (AMMA), an umbrella group that contains over 20 U.S.-based mask manufacturers, published an estimate that 5,000 workers were laid off in 2021. Some U.S. companies have already halted production.

The federal government now faces the unusual challenge of ensuring a reliable domestic supply of protective gear for the next crisis, as lawmakers have warned that dependence on foreign supplies could present a security risk. According to Soumi Saha, Vice President for Advocacy with Premier Inc. Manufacturers,

“…[manufacturers] need reliable business from both the government and the healthcare industry to create a sustainable supply chain for the future.”

Public and private groups who plan to reopen in 2021 will likely need to buy bulk PPE, but Bloomberg reports that the supply chain is in such a precarious state that a new surge could resurrect massive shortages. It is likely that supplies will be further stressed when the Delta variant cases further accelerate.

The CDC has endorsed N95 respirators as the front line of protection from viruses. In an explanation on proper use of PPE, the CDC, states that N95 respirator masks provide the best protection because they “[…] reduce the wearer’s exposure to airborne particles, from small particle aerosols to large droplets. N95 respirators are tight-fitting respirators that filter out at least 95% of particles in the air, including large and small particles.”
